Spend A PennyThis really has nothing to do with carpet cleaning!

Today i was carrying out a disinfect on a sofa that a client had recently purchased 2nd hand, and i needed to spend a penny. Once in the toilet, i found this beautifully crafted brass box inside the door (not operational) and made me wonder if this was where the expression ‘to spend a penny came from’.

Naturally when i got home i asked google this exact question, and sure enough, it was!

In British English, to “spend a penny” means to urinate. Its etymology is literal:coin-operated public toilets commonly charged a predecimal penny, beginning with the Great Exhibition of 1851.
